Chapter 50 pg. 1222-1241 Maternal Child Text
Scoliosis
• Lateral curvature of the spine
➢ Body develops compensatory curve to maintain posture and balance
➢ Measured in degrees: 10-20 slight, >40 requires surgery, >80 compromises respiratory function
Clinical Manifestations of Scoliosis
• Visible curvature of the spine
• Rib hump
• Asymmetrical rib cage
• Uneven shoulder or pelvic heights
• Prominent scapula
, • Hip and leg length discrepancy
Diagnostic Evaluation
• School screening
• Physical Exam
▪ Examine front, side and back while the child stands erect and bends forward
▪ Then have the child bend forward at the waist with hands hanging freely so the
trunk is parallel to the floor (Adam’s position) and view for: shoulder height,
scapula shape, flank shape (rib hump), and hip height
▪ Degree of curvature measured with a scoliometer
• X-rays
