o Lasted from 4th august 1964 to 1975.
o Spanned over 4 presidents.
o Extensive media coverage revealing the horrors of the conflict
pinning many Americans against the war ending in protests
the often ended in violence.
 Student protest on the invasion of Cambodia on 4th May
1970 which resulted in 4 deaths and 9 injured having
been shot by the Ohio National Guard
o Presidency received blame as they were the driving force due
to their power over foreign affairs.
o Caused a critical image of the presidency and government.
o Everything in the public eye, revealed by the media.
o Raised issues surrounding domestic policy.
 Created an unstable and unhappy political environment.
 Unpopular policy of The Draft
 Untrained young men to unwillingly go to war –
resulted in anti was violent protest.
o Burning of draft cards which was illegal.
o Caused issues with the defence budget.
 Cost $66 million every day to fund the war.
 Lead to higher taxes which were unpopular.
 Impact of WW1
o Wilsons failure and unpopular policies led to republican
government for 3 presidents: Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover
o Brought in isolationist policies and ideas to return to
‘normalcy.’
o End of the war brought social discontents of protests, riots and
strikes.
