Alarm Notification Appliance - ANS-A fire alarm system component, such as a bell, horn,
speaker, light, text display or vibration device that issues an audible, tactile, and/or visual
alert.
Alarm Signal - ANS-A signal indicating an emergency requiring immediate action, such as a
signal indicative of fire.
Annunciator - ANS-A unit containing one or more indicator lamps, alphanumeric displays, or
other equivalent means in which each indication provides status information about a circuit,
condition or location.
Approved Central Station Company - ANS-A central station company that has been issued a
valid certificate of operation from FDNY.
Automatic - ANS-As applied to fire protection devices, any device, equipment or system that
initiates system function as a result of a predetermined temperature rise, rate of temperature
rise, or combustion products, without the necessity for human intervention.
Central Station - ANS-A facility that receives alarm signals from a protected premises and
re-transmits or otherwise reports such alarm signals to the department.
Central Station Company - ANS-A person or entity engaged in the operation of a central
station.
Central Station Signaling System - ANS-A system comprised of the protective signaling
system at the protective premises, the central station physical plant, the exterior
communications channels, and satellite stations, if any.
Designated Representative - ANS-A person or entity designated by the subscriber who shall
be responsible for receiving notifications from the central station company concerning the
status of the protective signaling system at the protective premises and who is authorized to
take action with respect to such system.
Emergency Alarm System - ANS-A system to provide indication and warning of an
emergency condition involving a release of hazardous materials or other hazardous material
incident.
Fire Alarm Box, Manual - ANS-A manually operated device used to initiate an alarm signal.
Fire Alarm Control Panel - ANS-A system component that receives inputs from automatic
and manual fire alarm devices and transponder(s) of off-premises transmitter(s). The control
unit is capable of providing a transfer of power to the notification appliances and transfer of
condition to relays of devices.
Fire Alarm Signal - ANS-A signal initiated by a fire alarm-initiating device such as a manual
fire alarm box, automatic fire detector, water-flow switch or other device whose activation is
indicative of the presence of a fire or fire signature.
Fire Alarm System - ANS-Any system, including any interconnected fire alarm sub-system,
of components and circuits arranged to monitor and annunciate the status of fire alarm or
supervisory signal-initiating devices.
Fire Detector Automatic - ANS-A device designed to detect the presence of a fire signature
and to initiate action.
Fire Protection System - ANS-Approved devices, equipment and systems or combinations of
systems used to detect a fire, activate an alarm, extinguish or control a fire, control or
