Colonial mistrust of Britain - ANS-There were many differences between how the colonies
wanted their land to operate and how the British wanted them to operate. While colonists
wanted to push westward for new land, the Brits desired to keep American Indian peace on
the frontiers. Colonists were pro salutary neglect while Britain would impose taxes and trade
regulations. And most importantly, colonists wanted to govern themselves according to
English traditions while the British claimed them as a part of their empire. These differences
between the two would become long-term struggles that would become stronger as the
years went on.
Colonial relationship with Britain - ANS-The colonist built their society around traditional
English principles, they still had strong economic ties with Britain, and people read in English
kept up on news in England. Most of the religious denominations are tied with the Anglican
Church. However, there were great societal and cultural differences between the colonies
and England.
Colonial Society - ANS-All of the colonies allowed religious tolerance in the colonies but with
varying degrees of freedom. Only Christians can participate in government. Husbands had
almost unlimited power over their homes, including the right to beat their wives. Women
were expected to do housekeeping tasks, including cleaning, laundry, providing medical
care, and raising the children. Women had limited legal and political rights
Differences between Great Britain and the Colonies - ANS--Colonies were more drawn to
having a democratic government and wanted a separation between church and state
-Unlike Europe, very wealthy nobles and mass hunger among the poor weren't common in
the colonies. An economic class system was forming
-It was easier to move up the social ladder in the colonies and it was easier to acquire land
-There was more religious freedom in the colonies
-People in the colonies bore more children and married younger than they did in Europe.
More than 90% of colonists lived on farms and even though life was hard the living standard
was higher.
-Voting rights were provided to white land-owning males.
-The colonies were more ethnically and religiously diverse
Economic Makeup of the Colonies - ANS-New England - Due to harsh winters and rocky
soil, farmers only participated in subsistence farming, which means they only made enough
food for the family. They profited mostly from fishing, shipbuilding, and rum-distilling
Middle colonies - Rich soil in this area produced an abundance of crops to export to England
and the West Indes. Ironmaking was also a small manufacturing business in the middle
colonies. Trading led to the growth of cities like Philidelphia and New York.
Southern colonies - Since the geography of this land was diverse, agriculture varied greatly.
Some worked on small farms and few lived on large plantations that used slave labor.
Tobacco, timber, rice, and indigo were popular crops from this region
Effects of the Great Awakening - ANS-American's religious community came to be divided
between those who rejected the Great Awakening and those who accepted it (Presbyterians
