Title
The title of the poem suggests
connotations of freedom in the town
in which the poem is set. The reader
would expect this freedom to reflect
happy lives filled with hope and
endless possibilities for the future. It
should, therefore, reflect that the
inhabitants have basic human rights.
About the poet:
Ogaga Ifowodo (1966 – ) became
involved in human rights issues as a
university student in Nigeria. After
qualifying as a lawyer, he became
involved in the Civil Liberties Organisation
in Nigeria, suffering detention under Sani
Abacha’s military dictatorship. He has
published three books of poetry and
awards for his writing include two from
the Association of Nigerian Authors. After
completing his PhD in the United States
of America, Ifowodo taught at Texas State
University for several years before
returning to Nigeria. He now works as a
journalist in Nigeria, with ambitions to
enter national politics.
