•Discuss factors to be considered for the voyage planning - ✔✔1) determine
port departure/arrival and date
2) Determine chart/pub requirements
3) Determine distance and SOA
4) Plan the passage
5) Prepare to get underway
6) Underway
•Compute speed of advance, ETA and ETD required in voyage planning -
✔✔SOA= Total Distance(NM)/ Total Time(HRs)Practice with Practical Exercise
•Know how the Navigator determines a route that covers a great distance using
Great Circles and Rhumb lines - ✔✔The shortest distance between two points
on Earth is a Great Circle.

•Discuss in-port and pre-underway messages and arrangements - ✔✔1. MovRep
2. OTSR (Optimum Track Ship Routing) (includes requesting WEAX)
3. Logistics Request (LOGREQ) message
4. Navigation Brief (NAV Brief)
•Discuss underway messages, reports and orders - ✔✔Prior to going underway,
a navigator must route up a Movement Report (MOVREP) twenty-four to forty-
eight hours prior to departure. This MOVREP tells where the ship is going,
speeds, waypoints, times, and stops. Embedded in the MOVREP is a Plan of
Intended Movement (PIM) that describes where your ship intends to be based
on SOA and ETA.
MOVREP: Upon arrival in port, or when +/- 4 hours outside of Plan of Intended
Movement, or Fail to Sail.
Included in a MOVREP is the WEAX and OTSR

,•WEAX (Weather Forecast)
-If you request WEAX along your PIM (Plan of Intended Movement), you will get
daily weather forecasts for your location and forecasts up to 72 hours out, from
your closest METOC Center.
•OTSR (Optimum Track Ship Routing)
-Requested to the Fleet Weather Center (FWC-N/SD) 7-10 days prior to u/w for
voyages >1500 NM.
-Every day at 0800 local, the ship sends an updated position and current
weather status. If she will encounter severe weather along the route, FWC will
send her a safer alternate route to follow.
•Logistics Request (LOGREQ) message
-Routed through every Department Head
-Submitted prior to arrival/departure in a port
-Indicates what services you will require
Includes, ETA, ETD, fuel, water, food, tug and pilot services, etc
•Navigation Brief (NAV Brief)

•Understand the key differences, advantages and disadvantages of Raster and
Vector charts - ✔✔Raster:
created by scanning a paper chart. Common formats are .jpeg, .gif, .bmp
Advantages:
