Pathophysiology
Alzheimer's Disease is a neurological condition and the
most common type of dementia. Alzheimer's Disease is a
condition that progresses from mild memory loss to severe
memory loss over time. This neurological condition affects
brain parts that control memory, language, and thought.
Alzheimer's Disease can be fatal; according to the CDC,
this neurological condition is the sixth leading cause of
death in the United States and has increased to 55% from
1999 to 2014 (Center for Disease Control and Prevention,
n.d.). Alzheimer's Disease is a condition that scientist does
not fully understand the cause of the condition. However,
several factors affect each person differently and may
contribute, including age, family history, chronic illness,
and environmental factors. Other factors, such as
excitotoxicity, cholinergic dysfunctions, oxidative stress,
tau protein hyperphosphorylation, changes in amyloid-beta
peptide metabolism, herpes viruses, apolipoprotein E,
glycogen synthase kinase 3, insulin resistance, and the
endocannabinoid system seem to be related to the
pathophysiology of Alzheimer's Disease (Dal Pisol Schwab,
E. et al, 2022). Unfortunately, there is currently no
medication to cure this condition, but medications are
available to help manage symptoms. Alzheimer's Disease
has two pathologic hallmarks: extracellular beta-amyloid
deposits and intracellular neurofibrillary tangles. The
