1. Materials packaging & handling
When packaging is done well, it improves productivity and creates a better costumer experience.
In the past, there where three main components (family, job and globalisation) which have forced
that today we are able to talk about packaging.
When we need to analize the life cycle of a product which are introduction, growth, maturity and
decline, to analize the total price we need to consider packaging and handling.
We should note, that packaging will give some of the benefits to a company. In a product, the
handling will not give any type of value while in a service, it will provide a huge part of the benefit.
Ex.: plane. This fact, makes that the companies based on products need to search how to reduce
the cost of handling of their products.
It is important to select the packaging considering it’s impact on the environment. Packaging may
also help to prevent damage in terms of avoiding vibration while it’s being transported.
Packaging is classified into three diGerent categories:
a) Primary à packaging that usually is seen in a supermarket. Ex.: bottle of water, bottle of
milk,…
b) Secondary à packaging that contains other packaging in it’s interior. Ex.: a pack of 6
bottles of milk.
c) Tertiary à way to transport diGerent type of products. Ex.: pallet.
1.1. Main reasons to avoid poor basic packaging components
a) Allow their contents to become damaged in transport.
b) Cause contamination through leakage.
c) Experience products spoiled or damaged.
d) Loss of their contents.
e) Decrease shelf life.
f) Become too unsightly for selling.
2. Warehouses
Are an inevitable component in any supply chain activity as an intermediate storage of goods
between stages.
One of the most important things about them, is the layout. Also you need to specify the laws in
terms of safety and environmental in order to reduce the risk in population.
2.1. Wharehousing functions
a) Receive the goods from a structure.
b) Store the goods.
c) Pick the goods when being required.
d) Shipping the goods to the appropriate customer.
The automatic case picking has prons and cons.
Pros
a) Allows to handle large orders.
b) Can realize store-specific build-ups
