1. Three types of ADHD: 1. primarily inattentive type
2. Primarily hyperactive-impulsive type
3. Mixed type
2. Primarily Inattentive Type of ADHD: the individual has difficulty maintaining
focus.Participants may appear to be frequently daydreaming or thinking about things
other than what they are doing at the time.A participant may miss directions or seemto
forget things.This type of ADHD was previously known as attention deficit disorder
(ADD).
3. Primarily Hyperactive/Impulsive type of ADHD: An individual with this type of
ADHD maybe constantly moving and may make impulsive choices without thinking
about the consequences. They may seem impatient, be easily frustrated or frequent-ly
interrupt others.
4. MixedType of ADHD: characterized by inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity.
5. Considerations for clients with ADHA: - Extreme impulsivity may lead to unsafe
choices in some cases, monitor closely
- Consultation with therapist trained in HPOT is recommended to select appropriate

horse to meet sensory needs.
- Bring rider's attention to you before giving directions and check for understanding
- Use a quick pace for instruction with frequent changes in activity
- Redirect the rider's attention to horse and task at hand and train sidewalkers to give
nonverbal cues to redirect client without distracting
- Increase independence as soon as safe to do so
- Decrease any unnecessary distractions in the arena.
- Be aware that the rider may have difficulty waiting
- maintaining closer proximity to the rider may be helpful in supporting the participant
to sustain focus on the instructor.
6. Cerebral Palsey (CP): a motor disability resulting from brain damage that oc-
curred before, during or shortly after birth. This brain damage results in atypical
muscle tone. Unusually high muscle tone is called hypertonia or spasticity, while
unusually low muscle tone is called hypotonia.
7. Considerations for clients with CP: - Never try to prop up a rider's head with
any external supports - low head control should go to HPOT
- Individuals with atypical reflexes may pose safety hazard
- significant spasiticity may prevent client from sitting comfortably astride the horse.
- Hip disorders such as dislocated, subluxed, or unstable hips may not be able to

ride safely
- G-tube precautions
- may be at risk for skin breakdown
- may need narrow horse for tight adductors
