P6; Describe One Local or Social Care Service and Identify Its Place in National
Provision

For this assignment, I will be explaining how health and social care services are organised
and how every one of them is provided with their equipment. It is vital, for the individuals
who are employed within the health and social care environment must have a knowledge and
understanding of how they deliver their care, in their locality, associates with provision at a
national level. This will ensure that all patients who are using the service will have a maximin
benefit from all the services which are available. In the United Kingdom, many health and
social care services are provided predominantly by the public sector of the economy, but
some services are also provided by the private and voluntary sectors. However, a large
amount of our health care is provided through public, the hosen service provider I have
chosen to describe my local hospital named Penrhos Stanley Hospital which is located in
Holyhead.

Public Sector Service –
The public service has an organisation that are funded through the country’s taxes, they are
mainly paid for almost entirely through central taxes whilst a small amount of health care
services is funded by the national insurance contributions. All public health services in the
UK are funded directly through or indirectly by the National Health Service (NHS). Many
social care services are funded through local authorities (such as metropolitan boroughs,
county councils) from both central and local taxes. Over the United Kingdom, dental,
optician and social care services are only completely free to those in receipt of certain welfare
benefits and those under the age of 18 years, who are in full-time education. Everyone else
pays a contribution to or the full cost of, the health or social care service by paying charges or
fees.

Private Sector Service –
These types of private sectors are funded by fees paid to the service provider, these services
are provided by the private sector include –
 Day Care Nurseries
 Residential and Nursing Homes for Older People
 Private Schools
 Specialist Treatment Centres
 Hospitals
A small number of doctors and some dentists work provide private services to fee-paying
patients. For those who choose private health care usually subscribe to health insurance
schemes, so the insurance company pays the fees for care and treatment, subject to the
conditions of the insurance policy.

Voluntary and Community Sector Service –
These organisations are charities funded by donations, they provide health and social care
services. This specific sector makes an important contribution to health and social care
services in the United Kingdom, whilst many charities focus on particular diseases and
disorders. The organisation is commissioned by public bodies, often local authorities, to
provide services on their behalf. All patient support groups are examples of voluntary
organisations providing social care services are Age Concern, Barnardo’s, Help the Aged,
Mencap and many others.

The relationship between the public, private and voluntary organisations have become less
distant due to the local partnerships already being formed. A positive example of public use
