Unit 6: Website Development – Assignment 1
Introduction:
In this assignment, I have been asked to review two existing websites of the design and
effectiveness. Furthermore, I will investigate the principles of the two websites to be explaining the
purpose, features and elements. Furthermore, I will explain the use of design principles for both
websites once the type is identified (Ecommerce, Entertainment) to make a comparison within these
two applications of the websites. Lastly, I will be reviewing the two to identify the similarities
between the two websites and provide a short outcome to what was bad and what was well in order
to officially make the websites remain efficient and informative.

Content-based (Web 2.0 technologies):
The website I will be selecting would be sport and financial related websites to cover the contents of
web 2.0 technologies. These include wikis, blogs, social networking, folksonomies, podcasting and
content hosting services. The examples are Wikipedia, YouTube, Facebook, Myspace and Flickr.
These all relate to the types of web 2.0 technologies making it an effortless solution for anyone to
communicate and tailor information to either groups of people or to a much wider audience for
greater population over the websites. The Wikipedia is a very common website that can allow users
to view all the information provided and taking relevant points boosting their knowledge. The
website offers pieces of information laid out clearly with each heading to meet the need of those
that search for relevant texts.

An example of this is shown below:

This demonstrates an example which covers one of the types of web 2.0 technologies and clearly
emphasizes user-generated content, ease of use, participatory culture and interoperability with its
consistent layout such as the navigation tab that is located on the left of the page with all the links
included to proceed to the next page much quickly.

Product/service based:
The product and used would rely on the connection of the nature, purpose and target audience
since websites would need to strongly focus on what products and services to be published in the
websites as long as it is relevant and specific to that particular purpose and target audience.
Furthermore, some brands such as Amazon or Microsoft have a clear digital strategy which means
they would design a website for each country to identify the presence and the other website to
include each of their main products in that specific country.

There are many examples that would contain various products and services to be on sale which will
meet the audience’s preference and needs. Each website will have its own products and prices will
change each time where they may be offers or deals available. One of the examples would be
Amazon or Carphone Warehouse and these websites are Ecommerce as one type of website. The
other websites such as Now TV or YouTube contains under the entertainment websites since the
products and services are specific to media to bring content to the audience targeted at particular
ages.
