Roosevelt died in 1919 and public disillusionment over war led to return of conservative Rep. - Repub leadership accepted idea of limited gov as an aid to stabilize business - Appointees more sympathetic to business than to the general public - Develop economy by pursuit of profits and business - The Presidency of Warren Harding - Harding had been newspaper publisher in OH before entered politics - Well with Republican political cronies; played poker - Harding the “compromised” choice for Republican nominee after deadlock - A Few Good Choices - Appointed Charles Evans Hughes Secr. of state (previous SC justice) - Herbert HOover as Secr. of commerce; Andrew Mellon secr. Fall as Secr. of Interior and Attorney General Harry M. Daugherty - 1924: Congress discovered that Fall had accepted bribes for granting oil leases near Teapot Dome, Wyoming - Daughtry also took bribes for agreeing not to prosecute certain criminal subjects - Harding died suddenly while traveling in the West in August 1923 shortly before scandals uncovered publicly (never implicated in any of scandals) - The Presidency of Calvin Coolidge - Coolidge popularity in 1919 as Massachusetts governor who broke Boston police strike - “Silent Cal” - thought silence was good in politics - The Election of 1924 - Coolidge ging choice of Republican party as nominee in 1924 - Democrats nominated John W.
