Us history Period 4: Chapter 11: Society, Culture, and Reform, [207 – 217] class notes chapter 11 verified A+ Us history Period 4: Chapter 11: Society, Culture, and Reform, [207 – 217] class notes chapter 11 verified A+ Period 4: Chapter 11: Society, Culture, and Reform, [207 - 217] Due Date: Friday, November 3rd Antebellum period- time period before the Civil War during which there were many reforms - Est of free (tax-supported) public schools - Improved treatment of the mentally ill - Controlled/abolished sale of alcohol - Won equal legal/political rights for women - Abolished slavery Religion: The Second Great Awakening - Second Great Awakening- series of religious revivals starting in 1801 - Based on Methodism and Baptism - Stressed religious philosophy of salvation through good deed, tolerance for all Protestant sects - The revivals attracted women, Blacks, and Native Americans - Had effect on moral movements- prison reform, temperance movement, moral reasoning against slavery - Timothy Dwight- educated Reverend (pres of Yale College), helped initiate Second Great Awakening - His campus revivals inspired many young men to become evangelical preacher - Revivalism in New York - 1823- Presbyterian minister Charles G Finney starts series of revivals in upstate NY where many New Englanders settled - Sermons appealed to emotions and fear of damnation - Preached every individual could be saved through faith and hard work- appeal to middle class - Western NY becomes known as “burned over district” for frequent “hell and brimstone revivals” - Baptists and Methodists - In S and on advancing W frontier, Baptist and Methodist virvut preachers (Peter Cartwright) travel to diff locations to preach outdoors, actived faith of some who never belonged to a church - 1850- Baptist and Methodist were largest Protestant denominations - Millennialism - Much of religious enthusiasm was based on belief that the world was about to end w/ the second coming of Christ - Preacher William Miller gained tens of thousands of followers by predicting a specific date when the second coming would occur (didn't happen-Millerites will become Seventh Day Adventists) - Mormons - Church of Latter Day Saints - Founded in 1830 based on a book of Scripture (traced a connection between the Native Americans and lost tribes of Israel); settled near Great Salt Lake in Utah - Practice of polygamy created conflict w/ the US gov - Founded by Joseph Smith - Joseph Smith and Brigham Young - Religous leaders of the Mormons - Smith was founder, but murdered by a local mob - Young took over and moved Mormons to the far western frontier, settling in Utah - New Zion
