Have you ever worked as a caretaker before? How do you feel about the work?
Yes, I have worked as a personal caregiver for many years. The work is quite fulfilling on an
emotional level. Helping others do things that they cannot do themselves is oddly satisfying.
And that is why I have chosen this as a lifelong career.
What have been your specific responsibilities as a caretaker in the past?
Depending on the person that I am responsible to take care of, I first assess his or needs,
prepare a plan of care, monitor medication, assist with basic / personal needs, prepare
meals and handle housekeeping duties. Additionally, I have assisted with transporting
people from one place to another (for instance, for doctors’ appointments and social
engagements) and provided companionship and emotional support.
What skills do you believe that you have particularly that make you a good
contender to work as a caretaker?
I am a very patient individual with exceptional skills in handling people both physically and
emotionally. I am also capable of assisting with medication administration, and taking and
recording vitals such as pulse, temperature and blood pressure. As a great communicator, I
am a good choice to hire as a caretaker.
What has been your biggest challenge working at this position? Explain how you
overcame it.
I was once assigned to look after an old lady who had severe dementia. It was difficult to
manage her as she was not coherent and did not listen to me or any of her family members.
One day, she woke up in the morning and decided that she wanted to go horse-riding. The
house had an adjoining barn and she went over and climbed a horse, all ready to ride to an
unknown place. I caught up with her just in time and spent 50 minutes trying to convince
her that she shouldn’t do this. Thankfully, I was able to make her understand and led her
back to safety. This I believe was my biggest challenge since she was old and unwell, and I
was her caretaker and couldn’t let anything happen to her.
How would you react if a ward swore at you or was physically abusive?
If it is verbal abuse, I would fight back verbally by trying to calm him or her down. If the
abuse was physical, my first thought would be to make sure that he or she does not hurt
her or himself. Next, I would try to restrain him or her as safely as possible, and sound an
alert.
Do you feel that housekeeping should not be part of a caretaker’s work?
I don’t. A caretaker needs to make sure that he or she looks after ALL the needs of the
person he or she is looking after. And since housekeeping is part of the deal, it should be
included.
