Bij narratologie gaat het om de manier waarop verhalen verteld worden. Gerard Genette, een Franse
narratoloog uit de jaren zeventig, maakt hierbij onderscheid tussen:
Récit De vertelling; hoe wordt het verhaal verteld?
Histoire Het verhaal zelf.
De Russische Formalisten maken een soortgelijk onderscheid. Zij onderscheiden fabula en sujet. Ook
de filmwetenschapper Seymour Chatman ziet dit onderscheid. Hij spreekt van story en discourse.
Veder maakte Chatman zich in de loop der tijd harad voor film- en theaternarratologie.
STORY, PLOT & POINT OF ATTACK
Story Het verhaal in chronologische volgorde, zoals het op te maken valt uit de
handeling, wat er door personages gezegd wordt en wat er verder te zien is.
Aangezien de story altijd chronologisch is, eindigt deze meestal in het ‘nu’
(van de verhaalwereld).
Plot De vorm waarin de story verteld wordt. Oftewel: De manier en het gedeelte
van de story dat terugkomt in de tekst van bijvoorbeeld een toneelstuk of een
film. In het theater wordt er vaak veel meer zichtbaar gemaakt van de story (en
interpretaties van de story) dan direct valt af te leiden uit de toneeltekst.
Point of Attack Het moment waarop de plot in de story begint (ingrijpt).
VOORBEELD: Een aflevering van een detective-serie begint op het
moment dat de detective aankomt op de plaats delict.
Dit is niet het begin van de story, want het draait juist
om de vraag wat er daarvoor gebeurt is: Wat is de
aanleiding voor het misdrijf en hoe is het misdrijf
gepleegd? Wie is de dader? Deze onwetendheid zorgt
voor spanning. In dit voorbeeld wordt het verhaal dus
niet chronologisch verteld.
Schematisch ziet het er als volgt uit:
1–2–3–4 Het verhaal in chronologische volgorde; dus de story.
Het plot kan gelijk zijn aan de story en dus ook chronologisch zijn. Echter zou het er ook zo
uitkunnen zien:
3–1–2–4 Hier wordt het verhaal niet in chronologische volgorde verteld. De drie is
hierbij het point of attack – oftewel het punt waarop het verhaal wordt
opgepakt. Dit is in dit geval dus niet het begin van de story.
