Reliability of Eye Witness Testimony in Court Sentencing: An Op-Ed
In 2020, news hit the headlines after it was discovered that in 2012, 6 eyewitnesses misidentified a murderer named Lydell Grant, which left him sentenced to life imprisonment. Almost a decade into his imprisonment, Grant was exonerated from murder charges and escorted out of the Texas prison after the Innocence Project of Texas—a DNA testing machine—proved that he did not commit the murder. This means that the eyewitnesses who proved Grant to have committed the murder misidentified him. This leaves the justice system with one question to answer; are eye witness testimonies reliable in court sentencing?
