QUESTION 2: POLITICAL PERSUASION

Write a carefully-worded essay of 1000 – 1200 words (approximately 2 to 3 typed pages) in length in
which you critically analyse the content of the persuasive text below. Begin your essay by BRIEFLY
establishing what the text is about, who the target audience is, and what the persuasive purpose is.
For each of these aspects, your response should not be more than two sentences.

The persuasive text is Mmusi Maimane's resignation speech as the former leader of the Democratic
Alliance (DA) in South Africa. In his speech, Maimane expresses his initial vision when he became the
leader of the DA in 2015, aiming to build an inclusive and authentically South African organization to
challenge the ruling African National Congress (ANC) and address issues of poverty and inequality in
the country.

Maimane emphasizes his love for South Africa and his commitment to justice as the driving forces
behind his entry into politics. He highlights his non-career politician background and his focus on
creating a united, prosperous, and reconciled South Africa where opportunities are not determined by
race. Throughout his leadership, Maimane worked on transforming the DA into a party that
represents all South Africans, particularly focusing on attracting black South Africans to the party. He
believed that for the DA to govern effectively, it needed to be a party that belonged to and was
supported by all segments of society.

To briefly establish what the text is about, Mmusi Maimane's resignation speech as the former leader
of the Democratic Alliance (DA) in South Africa outlines his vision and objectives when he was elected
in 2015. The target audience for the speech is the general South African population, specifically DA
supporters and those interested in the country's political landscape. The persuasive purpose of the
speech is to communicate Maimane's reasons for stepping down as the party leader and to highlight
his commitment to building an inclusive, diverse, and authentically South African political
organization.

Maimane begins his speech by expressing his initial goals of creating a strong and diverse organization
that could challenge the ruling African National Congress (ANC) and address issues of poverty and
inequality in the country. He emphasizes his love for South Africa and his belief in justice as the
driving forces behind his political career. Maimane also stresses his non-career politician background
and his vision of a united, prosperous, and reconciled South Africa where opportunities are not
limited by race.
