This is the second half of the summary, by Grace Marshall and Nile Verleur! You can tell who wrote each
case by the number of “Z”’s in the words, because Nile is a weird American (much love).
Please tell your friends about the summary! Though please don’t send them a copy you downloaded
because writing this is so much effort. If we didn’t think it was worth the money, it would be free. But,
as the photo below this proves, we were still writing at 2am when everyone else was at the Helix
complex party, and I know that because I met half of you when I was cycling home.
Ok! Good luck! Some of these cases are long and difficult and wordy, but you can do it. We believe in
you.
And after this, it’s almost summer. We can do this.
And here is the proof. Look at the sleep deprived pain in Nile’s eyes. Please don’t steal the document!
PBL Case 7- Segmentation
Problem statement:
Learning Goals:
- What is the process of Gastrulation
- Migration waves
- Primitive streak formation and migration
- Germ layer creation
- Neurulation, neural cord formation
- What are homeobox genes
, - How is the gradient established through the Fgf and wnt signals
- How do these cell signals relate to the Clock/ Notch Signalling and receptors/ GSK3 beta
- What cellular responses/ molecular paths do Fgf and Wnt activate/ rely on
- What is the process of somite creation and body segmentation
Gastrulation
"It is not birth, marriage, or death, but gastrulation, which is truly the most important time in your life."
Lewis Wolpert (1986)
This quote. Just..wow.
If ever you’re stressed, just remember that nothing you ever do in life will ever be as important as the
events that happened when you were a 15 day old ball of cells that wasn’t even legally a human yet.
Fuck your life goals. Fuck your marriage. None of it is even remotely comparable to this, according to
every major developmental biologist.
Is it just me, but I get the feeling these guys aren’t the most fun at Birthday Parties.
In this fabulous stage, the whole body plan of the future organism is laid out, a grand ordering solemnly
marked by the appearance of the primitive streak.
Gastrulation is the process of making the primary germ layers
- Endoderm, the most internal germ layer, forms the lining of the gut and other internal organs.
- Mesoderm, the middle germ layer, forms muscle, the skeletal system, and the circulatory
system.
- Ectoderm, the most exterior germ layer, forms skin, brain, the nervous system, and other
external tissues.
,However, all of this starts wayyyy before (like, 6 days before). Before we make a trilaminar disc, we need
a bilaminar disc.
, Lets begin with the blastocyst just after implantation, at Day 9. We have the outer cells, the
trophoblasts, and the inner cell mass. The inner cell mass will differentiate into two types of cell; the
epiblast and hypoblast.
