Airport Surveillance Radar (ASR) - Answer: A type of surveillance radar in use by
ATC, used primarily for identifying and separating aircraft traffic.
Air Route Surveillance Radar (ARSR) - Answer: Radar system utilized by ATC
primarily for identifying and separating aircraft traffic.
Air traffic control radar beacon (ATCRB) - Answer: A type of surveillance radar in
use by ATC.
Alert areas - Answer: Depicted on aeronautical charts to inform nonparticipating
pilots of areas that may contain a high volume of pilot training or an unusual type
of aerial activity. Pilots should remain alert when flying in these areas. Pilots of
participating aircraft, as well as pilots transiting the area, are equally responsible
for collision avoidance.
Approach control - Answer: An ATC position responsible for ensuring the safe
transition of the aircraft into the terminal area.
Approach surface - Answer: A Part 77 imaginary surface that is longitudinally
centered on the extended runway centerline and extending outward and upward
from each end of the primary surface. An approach surface is applied to each end
of each runway based upon the type of approach available or planned for that
runway end.

Area navigation (RNAV) - Answer: A method of navigation that permits aircraft
operations on any desired flight path.
Automated Radar Terminal System (ARTS) - Answer: An ATC radar system that has
the capability to predict flight paths, determine conflicts with other aircraft,
receive altitude information, and transmit/receive other important aircraft
identification information.
Automatic direction finder (ADF) - Answer: An aircraft instrument that receives
NDB signals and acts as a homing device.
Base leg - Answer: Part of the traffic pattern in which a flight path is flown at right
angles to the landing runway off its approach end and extending from the
downwind leg to the intersection of the extended runway centerline.
Category (CAT) I - Answer: A precision instrument approach and landing with a
decision height not lower than 200 feet above touchdown zone elevation and with
either a visibility not less than 2,600 ft. or a runway visual range not less than
1,800 ft.
Category (CAT) II - Answer: A precision instrument approach and landing with a
decision height lower than 200 feet above touchdown zone elevation but not
lower than 100 feet, and a runway visual range not less than 980 ft. for aircraft
approach category A, B, C and not less than 1,150 ft. for aircraft approach
