This structure provides oxygen and nutrients to your growing baby and removes waste products from your baby's blood. The placenta attaches to the wall of your uterus, and your baby's umbilical cord arises from it. Fetal Membranes The fetal membranes are membranes associated with the developing fetus. The two chorioamniotic membranes are the amnion and the chorion, which make up the amniotic sac that surrounds and protects the fetus. The other fetal membranes are the allantois and the secondary umbilical vesicle. Amniotic fluid the fluid surrounding a fetus within the amnion. Polyhydaminos a medical condition describing an excess of amniotic fluid in the amniotic sac. It is seen in about 1% of pregnancies. It is typically diagnosed when the amniotic fluid index (AFI) is greater than 24 cm. Oligohydraminos a condition in which there is too little amniotic fluid around your baby during pregnancy.
