Week 6 Case Study Template Pathophysiology & Clinical Findings of the Disease 1. Based on the review of the history, physical and lab findings what is the most likely diabetes diagnosis for this patient? The most likely diabetes diagnosis for this patient is diabetes type 1. Though the criteria of type 1 are the same for type 2, the distinguishing symptoms are polydipsia, polyphagia, polyuria, and weight loss (book). 2. Explain the pathophysiology associated with the chosen diabetes diagnosis. Type 1 diabetes is assumed to be as an autoimmune- mediated diabetes that has environmental and genetic factors in which possibly trigger cell-mediated destruction of the beta cells in the pancreas (book). Autoimmune type 1 diabetes is a progressive autoimmune T-cell mediated disease that destroys the beta cells of the pancreas and occurs in those who are genetically susceptible. There can be a loss of tolerance to self-antigens with the formations of autoantigens with gene-environment interactions (book). The autoantigens are expressed on the surface of the pancreatic beta cells and travel in the bloodstream. T-cytotoxic cells and macrophages are then initiated by autoantibodies which results in the destruction of beta-cells.
