The Pearl Chapter 1 Questions and Answers 100% Pass What in general happens in the first chapter? In the town of La Paz, Kino, Juana and their infant son, Coyotito, live in a modest brush house by the sea. One fine morning, a scorpion stung Coyotito. Hoping to protect their son, Kino and Juana rush him to the doctor in town. However, the doctor turns them away because they are poor natives who cannot pay enough. Notice that the townspeople follow Kino. What does that tell you? The neighbours are curious and as well interested in Kino's situation. Why did the doctor refuse to treat Coyotito? The doctor refuses to treat Coyotito because Kino and Juana are poor and they didn't have enough money to pay him, but instead offer him eight pearls. What does that tell you about the doctor's personality? The doctor represents the colonial attitudes that oppress Kino's people because he symbolizes the arrogance, greed, and condescension towards the native. He has no interest in Kino's people, but rather to make money and disregard human lives. He is discriminative, greedy and selfish man. He is not a caring individual. He is materialistic and cold-hearted. He is a doctor for the title, social position and money, not at heart. What are the conflicts in the story so far? The conflicts are man vs. man, man vs. society, and man vs. nature. First conflict is when the baby got stung by the scorpion. The second conflict happens when Kino and Juana are trying to ask help from the doctor. But the doctor refuses to help, as Kino is poor and cannot pay him. What is the Song of the Family? The Song of the Family represents the time when he is happy with his family that made him feel warmth and security. It is a song of happiness, of being "whole." It is a song of peaceful existence, of being together in harmony with the family. What is the Song of Evil? When does it first appear? The Song of Evil is a song of disruption, of evil, of the breaking of happiness. It is something that Kino hears when something bad occurs to his family. This song first happened when the scorpion threatens Coyotito. Describe (a) Kino's, (b) Juana's, (c) Coyotito's reaction to the incident. Protector and Provider: Kino punishes the scorpion for invading his home and attacking his family but smashing it with his hand and grinding it into the dirt floor. Caretaker: Juana prays to both the Christian God and to the pagan gods (ancient magic) while the scorpion is dangling above the basket, and after the sting she immediately rushes to Coyotito and begins to suck the poison out of his shoulder. Coyotito laughs at the scorpion as it is dangling above him. After he cries. Describe Kino's views of his wife. Juana is patient, fragile, but full of iron. She is respectful and cheerful. She was almost as strong as a man. She could handle hardships such as pain and hunger and fatigue and childbirth. Describe the doctor. How do we know he was wealthy? He was fat, lazy, cruel, greedy, and sinful. He was a bad doctor; he was responsible for the deaths of some of his patients instead of curing them. He lived in the plaster and stone town. He had a servant. He came over from France where he used to live with his rich wife. Why could Kino have killed the doctor more easily than talk to him? Because the doctor was of a race which had beaten, starved, and robbed Kino's race. The doctor's race spoke to Kino's race as if they were animals. He was afraid of the white Europeans but hated them at the same time. What is the doctor's reply when he learns that a scorpion has stung Coyotito? He is not a Veterinary who has time to cure insect bites for little Indians. Describe Kino's reaction to the news that the doctor will not treat his son. He hits the gate on the doctor's house. He cuts his hands.
