Ralph and Piggy meet, and Ralph is instantly presented as superior: “Ralph’s golden
body”

since I was three’ ”
The conch is found and blown, boys begin to appear: “Yet most powerfully, there was
the conch”
Jack and his choir: “The boy who controlled them”
“a party of boys marching approximately in step”
A meeting is held as well as a vote for Chief. Ralph is voted Chief: “ ‘I ought to be chief,’
said Jack with simple arrogance”
“ ‘I’m Chief then.’ the circle of boys broke into applause”
Jack feels embarrassed that he was not voted Chief: “a blush of mortification”
Simon, Jack and Ralph explore the island and believe it is a good island: “The air was
thick with butterflies, lifting, fluttering, settling”
“This is a good island”
Jack finds a pig but cannot bring himself to kill it: “because of the unbearable blood”
Chapter 2
Rules are made- the start of democracy: “ ‘We’ll have, Hands up, like at school’ “
A littleun talks of a ‘beastie’, and Jack says they’ll hunt it: “ ‘The beastie came in the
dark’ “
“ ‘We’d hunt and kill it’ “
A fire is made
The fire gets out of control and a littleun gets caught in it and dies: “The flames as
though they were a kind of wildlife crept”
“ ‘That littleun had a mark on his face - where is he now?’ “
Jack and Ralph argue over priorities: “ ‘We want meat’ “
“ ‘Well (...) we’ll need shelters’ “
Jack is becoming obsessed with hunting: “The madness came into his eyes ‘I thought I
might kill.’ “
Simon finds his special place

Roger starts throwing stones at a littleun: “Roger stooped, picked up a stone, aimed and
threw it at Henry”
