The whole set of human chromosomes is seen in a human karyotype. Each cell in the human body has 23 pairs of chromosomes, for a total of 46 chromosomes. A set of homologous chromosomes is represented by each chromosome pair. Each homologous pair receives one chromosome from the mum and the other from the dad during human reproduction. There are 22 pairs of autosomes (non-sex chromosomes) and one set of sex chromosomes in a karyotype. Men (X and Y) have non-homologous sex chromosomes, whereas women (X and X) have homologous sex chromosomes.
