Through the process of concept analysis, the development of theories and research studies are formed (McEwen, & Willis, 2014). The use of concept analysis in forming theories is a way of helping nurses understand the foundation of nursing. Concept analysis is frequently used by advanced practice nurses when beginning their work. The selected concept of interest for this paper is self-care. Self-care is well explained through Orem’s Self-Care Nursing Theory. Throughout this paper, the definition of the concept of self-care will be explained and a literature review of this concept will be discussed. This paper will also discuss defining attributes, an antecedent and consequence of self-care, as well as empirical referents. A model case, borderline case, and contrary case will be made. Lastly, theoretical applications of the concept of self-care will be discussed. Definition/Explanation of Selected Nursing Concept.
