The United States Supreme Court is the nation's most powerful court.. The Supreme Judicial is at the top of the three-tiered federal court system, with the Courts of Appeal in the middle and the District Courts at the bottom ( Greenberg & Page, 2018). The U.S. Supreme Court has aided in certain important instances that have raised questions about the amendment of civil rights and civil liberties. Adderley v. Florida is one such case, in which the 14th Amendment was contested. The Adderley v. Florida case involved Harriett Louise Adderley and 31 other petitioners who were students of Florida A&M University in 1966. Adderley and the other protestors were arrested after demonstrating in front of a Florida county jail. The County Court indicted Adderley and her fellow peers of trespass on jail premises with malicious and mischievous intent (Legal Information Institute, n.d.).
