What should you suspect? - Answer - Renal failure (Pt probably has not received dialysis recently and the toxins in his body are starting to build up and making this Pt at risk for hyperkalemia and accumulating acids as well) A 61 y/o male is confused about the amount of atenolol he has taken. Which is a sign of an overdose? - Answer - Hypotension (atenolol is a beta blocker selective for beta 1, also has beta 2 adrenergic receptors that can lead to increased airway resistance especially with COPD and asthma Pts. Beta 1 effects will lead to bradycardia as well as hypotension)
