NUR 502 TOPIC 6 DISCUSSION QUESTION 1 Choose one of the middle-range theories. How could you use this theory to direct care in a nursing unit if you were the manager? Share your results Leininger’s cultural care diversity and universality theory helps show nurses the importance of taking into account the impact culture has on health and healing (McEwen&Wills,2014). Nursing and caring go hand in hand. The purpose of the Leininger’s theory is to generate knowledge related to the nursing care of people who value their cultural heritage and lifeways (McEwen&Wills,2014). As a nurse manager, I would use this middle range theory to direct care in a nursing unit. I would start by educating staff and informing them on how this theory can be effective when taking care of each individual patient and conduct workshops on the importance of cultural diversity in the workplace. The goal of Leininger’s theory is to provide congruent nursing care to person’s of diverse cultures (McEwen&Wills,2014). This is important to make sure patients know that they are special and their values have meaning to us as nurses. We should try to incorporate their beliefs in the care they receive as best as possible. Nurses should understand the patients view of illness to make sure when we care for them; we are looking at them with a holistic approach. Patient’s input in the care they receive is essential and would cause a better outcome in the long run. The focus is on recognizing and understanding cultural similarities and differences and using this information to positivley influence nursing care and health(McEwen&Wills,2014). Patient satisfaction scores would increase and once we see effective results and see that the technique used to teach staff worked, then it can be done on other units in the facility. It is also necessary to bring about the purpose in the workshops, and a form of enthusiasm to make sure the nurses see why this should matter for them. Communication is also key in this to make sure the message is clear. As advance practice nurses, we should understand the significance of this and make people aware of diversity and the cultural differences that are present in their community. We can enhance patients wellness and compliance, just by simply ensuring we include them in their plan of care are are sensitive to their cultural beliefs. Reference McEwen, M., & Wills, E. (2014).
