A nurse is caring for a client admitted with suspected meningitis. The provider has prescribed contact precautions for the client. What action should the nurse take? Meningitis is an inflammation of the meninges, which are the membranes that protect the brain and spinal cord. Both viral and fungal meningitis should be isolated as soon as meningitis is suspected. The nurse should implement fever-reduction measures, such as cooling blanket if necessary. Decrease environmental stimuli, quiet environment, minimize exposure to birth light (natural & electric), maintain bed rest, head of the bed at 30 degree, monitor for ICP. Educate the client to avoid coughing and sneezing which will increase ICP. The nurse should implement seizure precautions for safety precautions. As indicated per lab results, replace electrolytes as indicated. Treatments include; medication Ceftriaxone or cefotaxime in combination with vancomycin can be given until culture and sensitivity results are available. Phenytoin anticonvulsants given for ICP increases or the client experiences a seizure. For headache, acetaminophen, ibuprofen. Suggested Medsurg Learning Activity: Meningitis 1.
