, 1. Introduction
Becky is a four years and eleven months Xhosa baby, who is adopted. She has a history of
negligence and a lack of stimulation in her early years. She lives with her adoptive parents in the
rural area and her adoptive mother has some concerns. The adoptive mother noticed that Becky’s
speech is not advanced as her neighbour’s baby. Becky was referred to speech and language
therapy service when she was three years old. The therapy showed that Becky has a 12 months
delay in her speech and language skills. Becky only uses a few words when she speaks and
seems to be shy to communicate with other people. All these factors seem to be interfering in
Becky’s development and growth.
Early Child Development is the most crucial sectors in South Africa. Children between the ages
of zero to five years have a rapid growth and change in their emotional and cognitive
development. Early Child Development has shown to improve the emotional and cognitive
development of children who are properly nurtured. However, children who are raised in
improvised environments might have a slow development (Mbarathi, Mthembu & Diga, 2016).
The following essay aims to discuss the assessment process that was followed to assess Becky.
The essay will go on to discuss the importance to administer and test and how the results should
be used. The process used to compile the test battery will be discussed, and the discussion of the
relevant and accurate test will be included. The relevant definition and terms of this study will be
included and most importantly the ethical consideration and guideline will be briefly outlined
and described.
2. Context and aim of the assessment.
Becky’s adoptive mother is a concerned parent about her child’s development. The mother has
realized that Becky has not reached certain development milestones. Becky’s cognitive, social
and language skills are not equivalent to her age, as children her age group are able to do certain
skills that she cannot do.
According to Foxcroft and Roodt (2013), children with difficulties should be identified as soon
as possible as early childhood as a significant impact on later development. These difficulties
may range from speech and language and difficulty of movement. Therefore, the rationale for
assessing a child’s development at an early age is find the problem and find the relevant
