Week 5: Information System Contributions toAdvanced Nursing Practice ALL SOLVED 100% CORRECT LATEST SOLUTION FALL-2022 GUARANTEED GRADE A+
Examine potential information system contributions that serve to shape the advanced nursing practice environment. The use of information technology and computer science to support nurses in their care for patients have led to the development of computerized information systems, known as healthcare information systems. Multiple healthcare practices use these systems to help facilitate clinical and administrative duties. Healthcare information systems have proven to reduce errors, minimize cost and improve healthcare delivery. In advance nursing practice the nursing information systems help nurses to use data in a more organized and effective way, to develop care plans, perform interventions, document patient care and assess the quality of nursing care ( Moghaddasi, Rabiei, Asadi, & Ostvan, 2017). In my current practice we use Epic Electronic Medical Record System. This system holds 45 percent of the US population’s medical records and according to John Hopkins Medicine (n.d.) “in 2015, 747,900 patient records were exchanged with other hospitals, emergency departments and clinics in 49 states” (p. 1). Epic allows for my current practice to access patients’ prior appointments and data collected from those appointments if the patient was seen by another practice that uses Epic. The ease of access in this integrated system allows for sharing of health information and decreases chances of duplication of care and treatment, therefore enhancing continuity of care. The system also allows for communication among providers and between provider and patients. Although the EPIC EMR system has safeguards in place aimed at protecting patients’ identifiable health information, the clinicians and other healthcare workers may break the security standards by leaving the electronic protected health information open and unprotected. My current practice use dark screens on the monitors, a timed lockout on the computers and also all staff using EMRs have mandatory HIPAA (The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) compliance to complete bi-annually. Having a National Nursing Information System for opioids would improve patient safety. To date, most states have a statewide electronic database that collects data on substances dispensed in that state. Having the national registry would serve the same purpose as a local registry but on a national level. The data base would help patients that are legitimately seeking pain management, identify and deter diversion across state lines, help identify, and facilitate treatment for those patients addicted to prescription drugs (US Department of Justice, Drug Enforcement Agency, n.d.).
