LOLLYPOP GAME: WHY WE NEED LAWS AND WHAT TYPE OF LAWS DO WE HAVE IN OUR
DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY

PROCEDURE:

STEP 1: Announces that the need for some sort of legal system will be illustrated by playing a game.

STEP 2: Hand out lollypops and inform learners that they will be playing the lollypop game

STEP 3: Inform the learners that as this is a game they will be in teams and divide them into teams

STEP 4: Inform learners that they will also need team captains and appoint a team captain for each
team

STEP 5: Instruct learners to start playing the “lollypop” game- ignoring any requests for rules.

STEP 6: Allow learners to make up their own rules and mumble, but then inform them that they are
not playing the game properly

STEP 7: Instruct the team captains to pass the lollypop to the team members on their left and restart
the game. After a minute stop them and tell them that they are not playing the game properly.

STEP 8: Instruct the team captains to hold the lollypop in their right hands and then to pass it to the
team members on their left. After a minute stop them and tell them that they are not playing the
game properly.

STEP 9: Instruct the team captains to hold the lollypop with their right hands pass it to their left
hands and then pass it to the members on their left. After a minute stop and tell them that they are
not playing the game properly.

STEP 10: Instruct the team captains to hold the lollypop in their right hands, pass it to their left
hands and then pass it to the right hand of the team member on their left. After a minute or so stop
them and tell them that they are still not playing the game properly.

STEP 11: Instruct the team captains to hold the lollypop in their right hands, pass it to their left
hands and then pass it to the right hand of the team member on their left- but not to any members
wearing blazers. After a minute or so stop the game and arbitrarily choose a winner.

STEP 12: Debrief the game to find out how the learners felt about it, why they felt the way they did
and what did they learn from the game.

STEP 13: Summary and conclusion. Check that the learners understand why society need laws to
prevent confusion and chaos, laws should work retrospectively, laws should not discriminate against
