These eating disorders are characterized by extreme disruptions in eating 3nclude3 (Jordaan, 2014). I will further on discuss how South African black females are no longer perceived to be “immune” from eating disorders. The most common and clinically 3nclude3ed eating disorders are Anorexia nervosa and Bulimia nervosa. Both these disorders as well as Binge-eating disorder are classified in the DSM-5 under the category Feeding and eating disorders. Binge-eating disorder was previously not included in the diagnostic criteria. Anorexia Nervosa can be described as a ‘refusal to maintain a minimally normal body weight’ (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Those with anorexia have a tendency to skip meals, adopt highly restrictive and unhealthy diets, obsess over thinness and food, and present abnormal eating habits or rituals. Bulimia nervosa comprises recurrent episodes of binge-eating, together with compensatory behaviors that can be regarded as inappropriate. These behaviours present themselves in the form of binging, or overeating, followed by purging, often either by vomiting or using laxatives. Binge-eating disorder is characterized by excessive eating in a short period of time, and people with this disorder report a sense a lack of control during an episode. It is possible for a person to suffer from both disorders, simultaneously; one may also suffer from body dysmorphia and see herself as being “fat,” even when extremely underweight. There is no clear cure for these disorders, Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa primarily affect young women, whereas Binge eating disorder affects older individuals. Treatment is available and can result in full recovery for some. Ongoing treatment efforts and awareness are necessary to maintain health
