-Liver-Function
LIVER FUNCTION TEST LIVER- - essential organ for performing many physiologic and metabolic functions necessary for life. General functions of the liver. Metabolic functions: - carries out all the diverse reaction involved in both anabolic phases of protein ,carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. * Carbohydrate metabolism ~ Converts glucose to glycogen (glycogenesis)/ converts glycogen to glucose( glycogenolysis) * Protein synthesis ~Plasma protein such as albumin, apolipoprotein, acute phase er protein , protein invoilved in coagulation process, except gamma globulin, are synthesized in the liver. * lipid metabolism ~active center of lipid anabolism and catabolism, synthesizes endogeneous lipids( triglycerides, cholesterol and phospholipids). * Detoxification of drugs and toxins. * Transformations- conversion of a keto acid to an amino acid, production of ketone bodies. * Primary storage site for glycogen and vitamin A,D, and B12; Significant amounts of iron are stored in the RE cells of the liver, as well as in bone marrow and spleen. * Excretory functions: ~Secretes into the bile canaliculi many different compounds to form viscous fluid called bile. Bile- contains bilirubin esters, bile acids conjugates, cholesterol, phospholipids, soluible derivatives of steroid hormones and drugs, electrolytes
