Puberty: when a human becomes sexually mature, which causes physical
changes and affects different sexes differently
Secondary sexual characteristics: characteristics and changes that
appear when an organism is going through puberty
Ovulation: monthly release of eggs from the ovaries in women
Testosterone: hormone produced by the human body,
maily in men in the testicles; it affects sexual
development (stimulates sperm production and build up of
muscle and bone mass)
Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH): hormones that
stimulates the growth of ovarian follicles in the ovaries
before the release of an egg in women
Luteinising hormone (LH): a reproductory hormone secreted by pituitary
gland, stimulating steroid release from the ovaries, ovulation and the release
of progesterone after ovulation in women
Oestrogen (estrogen): a steroid hormone, responsible for development of
sexual characteristics and regulation of female reproductive system by
causing growth and repair of uterus wall and inhibiting production of FSH
Progesterone: hormone preparing endometrium for potential pregnancy in
women after ovulation by triggering the uterus lining to thinken
Menstruation: a vaginal bleeding that occurs as part of woman’s monthly
cycle, in order to shed the old lining of the uterus and start a new cycle
Oral contraceptives: birth control pills, made out of
combination of 2 hormones (estrogen and progestin)
preventing unwanted pregnancies
