Elie Wiesel’s Night recounts his harrowing journey through Auschwitz, Buna, and Buchenwald, tracing the collapse of his faith, the struggle to survive, and the devastating loss of his family. It is a stark, personal testimony of the Holocaust, told through the eyes of a teenage boy whose world is destroyed by brutality and dehumanization.

Night: Literacy Circle Assignment #3

Theme Crafter

I choose a moment, in the book Night, of Elie's relationship with his father.
One moment would be when they arrived at the camp in Birkenau they were
separated from Elie’s mother and sisters because family or parties were to be
separated to different parts of the camp due to their gender roles for unknown
reasons. Due to this separation Elie had to and always be by his father's side because
he didn’t have anyone else to be with in an unusual environment at a young age. So
he tried to be with his father at all times. Another moment would be when it was
time for inspection for proper health because the SS troops were trying to eliminate
some prisoners by killing people who weren't healthy. Both Elie and his father were
worried about each other's test. If either one of them didn’t pass, then they would
know what the consequences were. Lastly, when all the prisoners were forced to
evacuate because of the Russian soldier, they needed to evacuate. This time Elie
injured his leg, so he had to be in the infirmary. His father was worried that Elie
might be killed if stayed there so to be with his father, Elie tried to march as well as
he could to make it believable. All of these events show the timescape of Elie’s
relationship with his father and the support they give each other.
