  • In this essay, I propose to discuss democratic elements in the poetry of Walt Whitman, specifically in his work ‘Song of Myself’, published in 1855 as part of his collection Leaves of Grass. Through his poetry, Whitman does not just depict America, but he also produces readers that participate in a new American community. What Whitman tried to create with his poetry was a national and cultural American identity, authentic and independent.
