A4. Ownership Structure
A. For-profit hospitals are hospitals that benefit from money that comes from investors.
These hospitals have more flexibility in their services because they can choose
themselves. These hospitals are not required to provide charity care; however, they can
receive tax deductions for providing the service. These hospitals generally have to be
more cost-efficient because of the different finances they must clear. They are taxed for
sales and property.
B. Non-profit hospitals must serve the healthcare needs of the community. They provide
charity care and are at the will of the community. The hospitals must prove a community
benefit through tax forms and records to maintain their status and exemption from
federal, state, and community taxes. Philanthropic, religious, or educational funds usually
finance them.
C. The government owns government hospitals. They are exempt from most taxes and
subsidized tax revenues because they are governmentally funded. Hospitals must care for
those who are financially disadvantaged and offer charity care.
