Describe cómo cambia Moncho Durante la película
(Describe how Moncho changes during the film)

Consider:
¿Cómo es al principio?
(How is he at the start?)

Las cosas que cambian a Moncho
(The things that change Moncho)

¿Cómo es al final?
(How is he at the end?)

Essay:

(Moncho plays an essential role, and changes a lot during the film for
good and for bad. The development of Moncho is essential and Cuerda uses
this to demonstrate the process of maturing and the end of childhood. At the
start Moncho is totally innocent, but this changes when the protagonist of “La
Lengua de Las Mariposas” discovers the adult world.)

barco” a América.

(At the start of the film, Moncho is a very shy child. This is due, without
a doubt, to the fact that the child has passed a lot of time at home because of
his asthma. As a result, “he is like a sparrow and this is the first time that he is
leaving the nest”. He is scared of don Gregorio since he thinks that all
teachers hit their students. However, these characters develop an important
friendship during the film. As well as this, he is a very curious boy, whose
dream is “to take a boat” to America. This goal symbolises the freedom and
hope of childhood. It could be said that Moncho doesn’t have his own ideas at
the start of the film, given that he believes everything that Rosa and the priest
say about the afterlife and religion, but (with the help of don Gregorio) he
learns to question more often. This is evident when Moncho asks Rosa about
his father’s religion. It’s essential that this freedom be obvious at the start of
the film, because it doesn’t exist at the end. At the end of the film, Moncho
doesn’t ask anything, because he doesn’t have the freedom of speech that he
had at the beginning.)

miran a Carmiña y O’lis.
