basement membrane: provides structural support, overall integrity of BBB
tight junctions: protein complexes that seal gaps between endothelial cells, creates a barrier
to prevent free flow of substances between these cells
endothelial cells: inner lining, tightly packed forming a continuous layer, no fenestrations
