UNISA INF1520-23-Y Assignment 3

Question 1

1.1 Norman points out that design in itself is evolutionary. This suggests that there is a continual
change in the manner of design plans and implementations. With that, there can be challenges in
observing designing means and methods that do not hinder the development of interfaces that can
be of optimum usability with reference to the satisfaction of the same. It can be a barrier for designers
to go on working with depleted ideas and or outdated strategies in planning the making of a particular
machine, device, or technological development. Also, there is an impediment in devising a design that
is monolithic. That is, it is paramount to old and conventional operation and functioning whereby the
system interface may not ultimately serve its purpose. There are forces that derail the idealistic
approaches to developing interfaces that assist the mandate for their invention and they are
hampering the natural evolution of design.

1.2 Cluttering can be staggering for the user’s total experience with an interface. It can be shattering
through an overwhelming amount of information and a single view. This causes misunderstanding and
distractions for the user. Also, cluttering can cause irritation and frustration that can lead to an
emotional misbalance thereby causing disinterest in using the interface.

Question 2
2.1 Synchronous system is one that has a single operative timeframe and has data being disseminated
simultaneously. Asynchronous system is involved with a breaking down of operation and information
or data is spread out at different nodes of time.

2.2 There is no privacy and there is a high risk of inaccuracy with the sharing of information.

Question 3
• Impartiality
• Adaptability
• Receptivity
• Proactivity
• Teachability

Question 4
4.1 Mapping is the design relation between the control from a user and corresponding desired
outcome for the user. An example is seen with a mouse: moving the finger on the pad causes
concurrent movement of the cursor on the screen.

4.2 The design easily allows the user to tell what output will be produced based on the input that is
correlated to the diagram’s screen buttons. For instance, the ‘turn page’ buttons cause the user to
predict that clicking on it would bring another page based on the direction they chose, backward or
forward.

4.3 The page backward or forward icon sheds natural mapping.

4.4 The traffic light does not depict natural mapping. This is because there is not a valuable and or
interpretable reason why a traffic light would suggest exiting from the application, page or interface.
