The client might be an individual or group who identiy a need that could be met by developing a
new product.

The designer

The designer is an individual or group who will work to develop a product ior a client.

Inventors

An inventor is an individual or group who produce ideas ior a new or improved product.

Design makers

This role usually describes individuals who design a product and then make it.

Makers

Makers are the people who will manuiacture the product that has been designed.

Users

The user is the individual or group that will make use oi the product developed by the designer.

The relatonship between the lser, designer and makers

Designers consider the needs oi the user at the earliest opportunity in the design process. Designers
are also concerned with the same issues and relatonships as manuiacturers and so the design
process is becoming increasingly user iocused.

Conslmer profles

Some organisatons will create a user profle which is representatve oi people in their target market.
This helps them to determine needs and aspiratons oi users they are designing ior.

The marketng mix

In order to produce a design briei and specifcatono those involved in the decision making within the
company will need to consider what will afect the design and what will infuence the success oi the
product. The following fantors efentng the marketng mix are listed below.

Functonn- What does the product do? Are there any interestng ieatures in the product?

Periormancen- How well does the product do what it is designed to do?

Ease oi usen- How easy is it to use? Is it easy to set up? Are instructons needed?

Reliabilityn- How long will the product last? Is it likely to iail?
