Respirometers: Respirometers:
A respirometer is the apparatus used to
measure the rate of respiration of living
organisms by measuring the exchange of
O2 & CO2.
Soda Lime is used to absorb CO2.
A gauze must be placed between the
soda lime & the organism.
Decreases in O2 in the test tube
containing the organism reduces the
pressure un that test tube.
This causes the coloured liquid in the
manometer tube to rise (or the bubble to
rise).
You can measure the movement of the
liquid level over a set time & use the
diameter of the capillary tube to work
out the volume of O2 absorbed over time.
This is the respiration rate.
The syringe is used to reset the
equipment.
If a living organism is used, weigh its
mass before the experiment.
The effect of temperature on respiration
rate can be investigated, but if it is, time
should be allotted for the organism to
acclimatise to the new temperature.
