public money, such as education, police services and libraries.
They are not concerned about making a profit, they are more
concerned about creating jobs and providing facilities for local
people and visitors.
They are important because they help promote destinations and
encourage tourism development in the area

Public sector organisations can be:
Government controlled – the government will fun d national and regional
tourist boards such as VisitBritain
Local government controlled – local councils will have staff in charge of
promoting and developing tourism for their local area. An example of a
local government controlled organisation would be

Membership organisations – Membership organisations raise their
money from membership prescriptions, they also raise their money from
public money. An example of a membership organisation would be
English Heritage. In 2008/9 they had a total of 687,000 subscriptions.
