By using the conch shell they found. Describe Jack and his band of boys. They are a choir who mindlessly follow Jack. Who is chosen as leader? What factors shape this decision? Ralph, physical appearance and the fact that he had the conch shell sitting between his knees. What does Jack decide he and his followers will become? Hunters. Describe the sight of their landing on the island. What does this symbolize? Pink rocks, jungles, beaches. How do the boys solve the problem of everyone speaking at once during their meetings? Whoever has the conch has the right to speak, the conch symbolizes law and order. Based on this, how are the boys doing on their own so far? Explain. They are doing well because they are aware of their situation. What news does the little boy with the birthmark share with the others? There is a giant snake on the island that is coming to eat them. What affest does this news have, especially on the younger boys? Bad effects, causes the younger boys to worry and act out. Why is it so important that a fire be made immediately? They need to be spotted. Fire is a symbol of their want to go home. How do they finally succeed in lighting a fire? By using Piggy's glasses. In doing so, what do the boys unwittingly cause? What does this represent? A large, uncontrollable fire, this represents the fires of hell/ the fall out the island - represents inexperience. At the end of the second chapter, who is missing? How do the boys react to this? The young boy with the birthmark; the boys fell silent. What are Ralph and Simon trying to do? What is this a sign of? Build a shelter for the littluns, willing to work and care about the younger boys. Meanwhile, what is Jack trying to do? Catch a pig. Describe Ralph and Jack's argument. What is the cause? What kind of person does he seem to be? Explain. Destructive, bored because he kicks down sandcastles for his own amusement. Why doesn't Roger actually hit Henry with the stones? Of what is this a sign? Roger was bored, he wanted to scare Henry not hurt him. This is a sign of suffering. Why does Jack smear the clay over his face to create a sort of mask? For hunting "dazzle paint". What does Ralph spot on the horizon. A ship. What is the problem, and why has this happened. The fire went out because Jack needed everyone to hunt. What is Jack's response to Ralph's anger? Jack tries to calm Ralph and stay upbeat. What happens to Piggy's glasses? How and why? They were thrown down the mountain. How does Ralph respond? Angrily. At this point, how have things changed from the beginning? Why have these changes occurred? They have lost hope because the fire was their hope to be rescued.
