Understanding Different Health Conditions: Your Guide to Common Diseases,
Disorders, Syndromes, and Conditions
This leaflet strives to present an introduction to various diseases, disorders, syndromes, and
conditions assisting you in better understanding them and making decisions regarding your health.
Diseases are health issues that impair the body's daily activities. Bacteria, viruses, genetic factors, or
environmental factors can cause them. Two examples:
1. Diabetes: A long-term illness which impacts the
body’s blood sugar levels. Insulin deficiency is an indicator of
type 2 diabetes, while immune system assaults and kills
insulin-producing cells in the pancreas causing type 1 diabetes
(Diabetes UK, 2009).

2. Asthma: A respiratory disorder in which the
airways get inflamed, making breathing difficult.
Allergens, exercise, and environmental factors
can all cause it. Medications and minimising
stressors are used in treatment (Bacharier et al.,
2007).

Disorders are atypical disorders that impact the body's composition or functionality. They can be
gained or inherited. Here are two illustrations:
, 1. Depression: is a mental health condition
characterised by ongoing depression, loss of interest,
and exhaustion. Both everyday life and relationships
may be impacted. Therapy, medicines, and lifestyle
modifications are all potential treatment options
(Bhowmik et al., 2012).

2. ADHD is an attention-deficit/hyperactivity
condition that affects both children and adults. Having
trouble focusing, being too active, and acting
impulsively are among its characteristics. Treatment
plans for management may include medication and
behavioural treatment (Voeller, 2004).

Syndromes Syndromes are groups of symptoms appearing at the same time and representing a
certain condition or disease. Two instances:
1. Fibromyalgia is a persistent pain, tiredness,
and sensitive point condition. It can also induce
sleep problems and cognitive problems. Jahan et
al. (2012) describe treatment as a mix of drugs,
counselling, and lifestyle modifications.
