Hutchinson was the last royal governor of Massachusetts. Victory over the French has led to many Americans questioning the wisdom of Britain in keeping Canada. Some enterprising Americans have examined how far the separation of Canada from France was wise and practicable. Their objections are based on the reasoning that choosing to separate Canada from France would in time lead some Americans to think more favorably about the separation of the British colonies from the mother country and independence. This is now leading men to consider and pay greater attention than before, to the colonial relationship with England, and regard advantages enjoyed by the English, which are not enjoyed in the colonies, as unfair. 5 Source B From a sermon at Salem Church, Massachusetts, by Reverend Thomas Barnard, 25 May 1763. This was delivered to leading officials appointed by the Governor. America has a promising future. We are now safe from the Native Americans. We are freed from our enemies, have escaped oppression, and will no longer suffer cruelties at the hands of the French. As we remember the years before the war, we can now sing ‘The trap is broken, and we are free from the French’. We can look forward to a period of enjoyment of the liberties that the British won for us with the sacrifice of their lives, their treasure, their blood. We can look forward to peace and freedom. We must thank our mother Britain, who rescued and protected us. We must forever serve and honor our mother Britain with all our duty, love, and gratitude. 5 0 1 With reference to these sources and your understanding of the historical context, which of these two sources is more valuable in explaining relations between Britain and its North American colonies in the early 1760s? [25 marks] Section B Answer either Question 02 or Question 03. Either 0 2 ‘The most serious threat to British rule in the years 1765 to 1770 was the Sons of Liberty.’ Explain why you agree or disagree with this view. [25 marks]
