[2 marks] b) Not all materials are magnetic, name one magnetic material. [1 mark] c) On the diagram of the bar magnet below, sketch the magnetic field lines. [2 marks] d) Describe how a magnetic compass works. [3 marks] a) Seismic waves can be used for detection. State what they can be used to detect. [1 mark] b) Seismic waves can be used to study parts of the Earth we cannot visit. Suggest how these waves could give us information about the Earth’s core. [4 marks] c) Compare P-waves and S-Waves. [4 marks] A student wanted to investigate how varying the force on an object affects the acceleration. They set up the equipment as shown in the diagram above. Gravity was constant in this experiment and can be taken to be 10N/Kg. a) To get results for this experiment, several measurements needed to be taken. Describe what these measurements were, giving their units. [4 marks] b) Describe how the force in this experiment was changed. [2 marks] c) The mass is a control variable and needs to be kept constant. Describe how this is achieved. [2 marks] d) At the start of the experiment the mass of the block was 750g, and the weight on the stack was 7N. Calculate the total mass used. [5 marks] e) Seat belts can be used to keep occupants of cars safe in the event of an accident. Explain how. [5 marks] 04 The electromagnetic spectrum is a continuous spectrum of waves. a) Radio waves, visible light and gamma rays are three parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. Give a use for each of them. [3 marks] Radio waves: Visible light: Gamma rays: b) Compare the properties of radio waves and gamma rays. [4 marks] c) Describe the formation of an image through a convex lens. You should include the type of image formed. [3 marks] d) Complete the ray diagram to show the location of the image. [4 marks] 05 a) A student was setting up blocks balanced upon a ruler on either side of a centre point. Instead of using trial and error, they wanted to determine mathematically the distances involved. The first block is 1.26kN (F1) and is placed 25cm (D1) left from the centre point. The second block is 630N (F2). Calculate the distance (D2) this should be placed from the centre block to ensure it is balanced. [6 marks]
