Outline and evaluate Wundt’s role in the emergence of psychology as a
science. (8 marks)

Wundt’s work marked the beginning of psychology as a science. He introduced
the concept of introspection – the first attempt to study the mind under
controlled conditions. One of his main objectives was to try develop theories
about mental processes such as language and perception. He asked people to
record their thoughts, images, and sensations into 3 categories after being
presented to various stimuli. The stimuli that Wundt and his co-workers’
experiences were always presented in the same order to minimise order effect
– this is known as structuralism. This work led to Wundt producing the first
academic journal for psychological research.
