Plan for Health Promotion
Tobacco usage is the largest preventable cause of death in the United States and
throughout the world. According to a 2021 report released by the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC), more than 16 million Americans are living with a disease induced by

smoking. In 2018, the Surgeon General's Advisory on E-Cigarette Usage Among Youth stated
that e-cigarette use grew by 78 percent among high school students over the previous year, and
that one in five high school students and one in twenty middle school students now use
ecigarettes (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, n.d.-a). Tobacco usage kills
more than 7 million people worldwide each year. If the global smoking habit does not alter,
more than 8 million people will die each year from tobacco-related diseases by 2030 (Miech et
al., 2019).
E-cigarette use is extremely dangerous for children, adolescents, and young adults.
Because the majority of e-cigarettes contain nicotine derived from tobacco, they are classified
as tobacco products. Nicotine is the principal active ingredient in both conventional cigarettes
and electronic cigarettes, and it is extremely addictive. It may have a detrimental effect on
adolescent brain development, which extends until the early to mid-20s. Nicotine also produces
cravings for cigarettes and withdrawal symptoms. It is a poisonous drug that elevates blood
pressure and adrenaline levels, hence increasing heart rate and the risk of having a heart attack.
Apart from nicotine, e-cigarettes may contain hazardous or potentially harmful chemicals, such
as ultrafine particles that can enter the lungs deeply (Overbeek et al., 2020). Vaping has been
linked to an upsurge of lung damage and deaths. The Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) documented 2,807 cases of e-cigarette or vaping-related lung damage (EVALI)
and 68 deaths associated with the illness in February 2020.
Adolescent Health Promotion
Miech et al., (2019) cites three reasons why e-cigarettes may be particularly appealing
to young people. To begin, many teenagers assume vaping is a less dangerous alternative to
smoking. Second, e-cigarettes are less expensive per use than conventional cigarettes. Finally,
both youth and adults appreciate the absence of smoke. Due to their lack of odor, e-cigarettes
